Key Pointers –
- The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is preparing to implement a new import registration system for laptops, computers, and tablets starting from November 1. The government has indicated that there won't be further postponements beyond October 31 for this shift to an import authorization system.
- The registration process will initially be uncomplicated and non-restrictive. Importers will need to register with DGFT, specifying the quantity of goods they intend to import, and they will receive import authorization accordingly. This move is aligned with the government's aim to enhance security in IT hardware imports and promote local manufacturing.
- Importers will be allowed to register about ten days prior to the mandated switch to the new system, and the process is expected to be completed in two to three days. The initial authorizations issued will remain valid for a year, and any future quota restrictions may necessitate a more detailed authorization system based on the total value of imports.
