GST - CBIC directs monthly monitoring of commodity prices from Sept 2025 to Mar 2026 to assess market impact of GST rate rationalization effective 22nd Sept 2025

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has initiated a directive for the monthly monitoring of commodity prices as part of an effort to assess the impact of GST rate rationalization. This directive follows the GST Council's approval of new rate adjustments for various commodities, which will come into effect on September 22, 2025. Field formations have been tasked with gathering detailed price data of commodities both before and after the implementation date from trade associations and market sources.
The reporting period for this data collection spans from September 2025 to March 2026. The first report is expected by September 30, 2025, with subsequent reports due by the 20th of each following month. This systematic collection of data aims to provide insights into how the changes in GST rates affect consumer prices across a range of goods. The commodities under scrutiny include essential items such as dairy products, chocolates, toiletries, household appliances, medicines, bicycles, and solar products, among others.
The primary goal of this exercise is to closely observe and understand the market dynamics resulting from the GST rate changes, ensuring that any significant impacts on consumer prices are promptly identified and addressed. This initiative reflects the government's proactive approach to managing the economic implications of tax policy adjustments on the market and consumers.
